Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the total length of all the linear walls in your space. For instance, you might need a single 12-foot section of crown molding to cover every short wall, and two 8-foot sections for every large wall, especially in a 165 square foot room with a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: For the first step, the crown molding piece must be measured and marked for cutting. While a manual miter saw is used for used for making miter cuts on crown molding, using a power miter saw is preferred as cuts tend to be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim is already equipped featuring a paint primer, but should you happen to be using bare wood molding, it's advisable to use a coat of primer to the wood and let it cure for at least an hour before attaching it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks act as a reference while nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before attaching the crown molding to the wall, invert it so that it is in an upright position. Enlist an assistant to help you in positioning the molding on a second ladder and managing it as you proceed. Begin at the middle of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps might periodically arise along the molding and the walls and ceiling, because rarely are the walls and ceilings perfectly flat. To resolve these spaces, it's possible to fill them up by using a line of flexible, paintable caulk over them. Any leftover gaps at those mitered corners are also filled with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't yet painted them, put painter's tape along the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
