Our Installation Process
Size the Space: Determine the entire measurement of the straight walls in your space. To illustrate, you might need a single 12-foot strip of crown molding to cover each short wall, and two 8-foot sections for each large wall, especially in a 165 square foot area with a couple of 15-foot walls and two 11-foot walls.
Crown molding should be cut: To begin the process, the crown molding piece must be measured and indicated before cutting. While a manual miter saw can be used for miter-cutting crown molding, using a powered miter saw is preferred since cuts tend to be more exact.
Clean up the Wood: In many cases, most trim already comes with a primer coat of paint, but should you happen to be using unpainted raw wood molding, it's advisable to apply a coat of primer to the wood then let it dry for no less than an hour before installing it onto the wall.
Locate and mark the wall studs: Use a stud finder and a pencil to identify and mark each wall stud on the wall surface, positioning the marks several inches beneath the junction of the wall and ceiling. These marks will serve as a point of reference when nailing the crown molding pieces together.
Fit the crown molding in place: Before installing the crown molding to the wall, turn it over ensuring that it is upright. Enlist an assistant to help you in positioning the molding onto a second ladder and managing it while you start. Begin at the center of the wall.
Caulk Holes: Gaps and spaces might periodically appear between the molding and the walls and ceiling, as rarely are the walls and ceilings absolutely even. To address these spaces, it's possible to seal them by applying a line of flexible, paintable caulk along them. Any remaining gaps at the mitered corners can also be rectified with caulk.
Painting the Molding: If you haven't already applied paint to them, attach painter's tape at the upper and lower sections of the moldings at the points where they meet the wall and ceiling.
